Ok, so it's been a few years since I downloaded my rom set. I've just gotten around to wanting to dive back into getting it cleaned up. Currently, I have a.138 romset. I also have each update from each release up to current each in their own zipped files. So basically, I have all the roms and updates needed, but I'm a bit hesitant about how to go about updating the main set. Two caveats there, I'm not worried about CHD's at this time, and I dont have anything downloaded from MESS. Will I need to download any old sets from MESS? What tool do you guys usually use these days? I've seen some people suggesting romcenter, and some suggesting clrmamepro still. I've spent hours trying to figure out clrmamepro with different tutorials, but still feel uneasy about whether its doing the right thing or not. ![]() With everything currently seperated, I dont know if the results from the scan I was trying is right. I have a DAT file for each update as well, and cant seem to find where it says how I'm supposed to use it, other than load it into the profiler. Do I actually need each one, or is there a better way? Or should I simply look into a different rom manager instead of clrmamepro? Given the distance between your existing romset and the current one (138-171) I'd just download a new complete set. If for some reason you can't get a new set I'd say stick with clrmamepro, but I'm oldschool and I've been using it since its first release so I don't see the difficulties people have using it. You don't need all those dats, just get the latest mame binary and create a profile by pointing clrmamepro at that. If you are interested in MESS, say 'Yes' when it asks about including lists, if you just want MAME then say 'No'. Set up an empty rom path and an add path. Put all your existing mame roms in the add path and all the update roms as well Run a rebuild job in clrmamepro, point at the empty rom path and tick the option for using add paths. Tell it if you want a non-merged, split or merged set and hit start. Wait for a really long time and it will tell you what it did. Then run a scan job, with all the fix options ticked. When it's done you should have a working rom set. It's very tricky (for me at least) to discover an updated romset online. I've tried looking in all the usual places but the bay and usenet are both barren when it comes to fullsets that are above ~.145 (at least in my experience). Are there any MAME communities outside of reddit that might be worth some investigating, should I be in a similar position to the OP, where I have an older romset and wish to update? All Mame Bios Pack Download![]() ![]() I also thought I read that versions of romsets werent necessarily recompiles of every rom, but were just the new roms that were added as of the updated paired version of Mame itself - i.e. If say 10 games were added for support in 0.160 then the differences between a romset of 0.159 and 0.160 was that 0.160 only contained the 10 roms that were now compatible - am I misunderstood? Yes there are but I can't tell you about them, it's against rule 3 I also thought I read that versions of romsets werent necessarily recompiles of every rom, but were just the new roms that were added as of the updated paired version of Mame itself - i.e. If say 10 games were added for support in 0.160 then the differences between a romset of 0.159 and 0.160 was that 0.160 only contained the 10 roms that were now compatible - am I misunderstood? You are mostly correct. How To Use Mame RomsEach versions' romset is a complete set of all of the roms, these will be largely the same as the previous version. Bad dumps may have been fixed, roms may have been moved to more logical places (into or out of a driver/bios/parent/child sets), new drivers may be added, some roms may be renamed. The cumulative effect of these small changes over a large number of versions can pretty big. The OP wants to upgrade ~33 versions, thats a lot of small changes (and at least one really big one)! I did look into downloading a new rom set, but didn't give it much thought. What I came across was either outdated, or too many Terabytes for me to bother due to my current hard drives. Yea, terabytes lol.
